BioPool invites natural, chemical-free swimming for the whole family
This family had scored a beautiful Eichler home in need of TLC in San Rafael, Marin County, California. They reached out to me with sketches and measurements in hand for a bio-pool, a hot tub, a dining area, a veggie garden and a pétanque court.
Bio-pools are swimming ponds with natural sand and a plant filtration system which cleans the water. With just the use of one pump, wetland and aquatic plants regenerate the waters in a shallow compartment called the regeneration area. There is a completely separate second area where one swims in much deeper waters. In a fun collaborative effort, the clients and I looked at different geometries that would suit the modernism of the Eichler house. We went from an initial diagonal configuration to rectilinear at 90 degrees. This south-facing backyard was also in dire need of some shade. I carried out shadow studies to secure summer relief with wise tree-planting. The materials chosen were D.G. Decomposed granite and corten-steel around planters. The final plant palette is composed of a few natives and urban tropical-looking plants around the pool and hot tub.
